Long time no post. On Monday I went in for some fairly major jaw surgery (both jaws cut off, moved, lots of titanium). Those of you in the Facebook group would have seen my pre-surgery post. I’m slowly recovering but still not consuming much fluids, so I’m super dehydrated and fairly weak still. Like walking upstairs and standing still for a minute wears me out. The good news is I have a month off work to spend time planning my trip to Goodwood, maybe including flying to Japan to buy a Cappuccino to send home. (Cost depending, paging Flavien). In the last week I have gone from 61.8kg (taken on Monday morning, had maccas the night before, normal weight for me) down to 55.5kg this morning. Should work out to some good lap times.

Good luck with the recovery, that sounds quite scary and difficult.

Damn friend, not an easy thing to contend with! I wish you well with your recovery! What prompted such drastic surgery if you don’t mind my asking?

So I had a fairly major underbite which was a symptom of being born with a cleft lip and palate. That got fixed very early on in life (<1yr 0ld) and then I got braces, a bone graft and a couple of other bits and pieces done over the last 10 years or so. This has been planned for a while, the wait being for me to finish growing (20yrs). Luckily Our government healthcare program has provisions for births that result in altered appearances (I don’t like calling it a defect, everything worked fine) so Absolutely everything that I have had done has been paid for by the taxpayer. Not to imply that I had anything wrong with how I looked, but the government makes this kind of treatment zero cost in order to make me more visually employable. Its a complicated thing to explain, both my reasons and the “employable” thing (I’ve had no trouble so far) but id be happy to explain it if you wanted.

It’s more frustrating than anything else. The exhaustion and a bit of anesthetic made me super emotional in hospital, whenever my parents came in I was in tears every 5min. I also don’t like how immobile it makes me. I am completely physically capable, but I can’t do much without feeling exhausted within a minute or so.

“lots of titanium”

Hey, at least nobody can say you have a glass jaw anymore.

Welcome to the major jaw surgery club! When I was 21 I had my lower jaw surgically reduced almost 1/2 inch. From massive underbite and misaligned joint to engineered jaw perfection in only 4 craptastic months of recovery! I did loose a bunch of weight though... I know my recovery was a pain, literally, so I wish you the quickest and least annoying of possible healing.

I have a minor underbite which apparently can only be fixed with jaw surgery. I doubt I’d ever do it. I know since you’re still recovering you can’t say for sure how the whole process is.

But I’ve already done one surgery I could have don’t without (bunion removal) which sucked beyond anything else, and I had just had my hip replaced. So now I’m super wary of anything I don’t a surely need.

Far out! mines a bit different, my upper jaw was too short so they’ve pretty much cut the upper off, shifted it forward and put it on adjusting screws for the next few months. Lower jaw only got a slight tweak to straighten it up. I also got my chin moved forward.

Happy healing!

Side note: my first job out of college was running a bone research lab. I got pretty good at embedding bone samples in methacrylate and slicing them into pieces thin enough to be viewed under a microscope. One set of samples was for a graduate student examining bone regrowth in dogs undergoing the same procedure as you are. It was really cool to see how the bone knits itself back together after being sawn into pieces.

Well to be clear, mine was very major. approx 13mm of underbite to fix, plus my lower jaw being not straight so that was fixed too.

Yeah I feel that, anesthetic or not I get pretty emotional under extreme duress. The immobility sounds worse though, that would drive me nuts. I’m sure you’ve been inundated by a thousand suggestions from family in friends, but in your position I would treat it kinda like depression and just do everything I could to keep myself buzzing off of something like gaming or reading a good book.
